Taking a network from 'works when it wants' to 'works all the time'

When ENS began at SeaMobile Corporation they were a very young company and there was a lot to do. We began by listening and quickly realized several issues were causing user pain. After delivering some quick wins to gain people's confidence we drew up a plan that called for fixing foundational issues such and email routing, printing configuration, domain joining, file system permission organization by groups and the like. We presented our plan to SeaMobile staff explaining that a little time would be necessary before things would get better. With their trust, and a little breathing room we went to work.

We have found people are willing to offer a lot of patience if they believe you understand there is a problem and they believe you are committed to solving it. Talking with them-usually not via email-is a great place to start; but in the end, you have to deliver.

Within weeks, we had a network consistently configured with naming conventions, group policy management, antivirus protection, proper DNS, consistent printing and greatly simplified email routing.

Further gains came when we standardized the laptop configurations to ENS specifications customized for SeaMobile.

With a reliably running network, ENS moved on to implementing solutions to increase office efficiency. This included remote computing solutions, calendar and resource sharing, and extending office data to smart phones.
